Rosa Parka

Mom: “Do you have any clothes to wash? If you do, separate the whites from the colors please. The whites are going first.”

Me: “That, said in the wrong context, would be so racist.”

Mom: “That’s true. In fact, I’m going to do the colored ones first today. It is time we rebel against these racist ideals!”

Me: “Okay…”

Mom: “Free the colored washing from slavery! It is time the washing segregation ends! It is time we give colored clothes the right to be washed and dried alongside whites! Rise with me, noble clothing-washers!”

(I sigh and go back to what I was doing. Later, while my mother is hanging out the washing, she comes to me holding a dark shirt.)

Mom: “This shirt got accidentally washed with the whites. From now on, it will be known as Rosa Parks. And it is my hero.”
